Living alone

If you live on your own

The smallest amount of kit and the largest amount of planning.

The honest version

Your risk is not supplies. It is that nobody would notice for two days.

Set up the check-in first

Agree with one person that you will message each other in any incident, and that if there is no answer by a set time, they will come or send someone. Put it in writing so it feels real. This matters more than anything you can buy.

Keep it small

Three days of water and food for one person fits in a single cupboard. You do not need a shelving unit and you should not buy one.

Tell your energy network if you would struggle

Priority and vulnerable customer registers are free everywhere we cover, and living alone with a health condition qualifies in most schemes. It gets you a phone call and a place in the queue.

Know two neighbors

Not friendship. Names and a way to knock. In every study of every disaster, this is the thing that decides how the week goes for people on their own.
