Damage to undersea cables in the Baltic is now a regular event
What happened
Since late 2023, a series of subsea cables and pipelines in the Baltic Sea have been cut or damaged, and European governments have treated several of these as deliberate. European energy bodies have documented an increase in physical and cyber interference with energy assets across the EU during 2026.
What it means for your household
For a household, the realistic effect of a cable being cut is slower or interrupted internet, not the lights going out. The systems are built with redundancy and traffic reroutes, usually within minutes. This is a real problem for governments and telecoms companies. It is a minor inconvenience for your kitchen.
Nothing. If you want one thing, know how to use your mobile data as a backup for home broadband, and know that a battery radio does not need either.
